American Hiking Society was formed in 1976 as a charitable organization. The support of their donors, sponsors, and partners is what has prompted them to improve trail access for millions of Americans throughout the decades. Since its founding, AHS has mobilized 623,265 volunteers, facilitated 45,007 miles of trail maintenance, and contributed over $91.6 million in volunteer labor. The organization stresses the importance of volunteer work and further propels the idea that anyone, regardless of experience or ability, can be involved in AHS at some level. By getting involved in their volunteer events or through donations, American Hiking Society benefits greatly from the work of the community that shares a love for hiking. The events they foster are varied and cater to the expansive interests of the outdoor community. For example, Volunteer Vacations are week-long outdoor service trips that consist of building and maintaining hiking trails in an array of locations across the country. The point of Volunteer Vacations is to provide hikers of all experience levels the opportunity to give back to the trails they love, meet new people with similar interests, and expand the hiking community. Similarly, National Trails Day® is an event that takes place on the first Saturday of June and includes a whole day of public events that are aimed to promote advocacy for trail service. Hikers, bikers, rowers, trail clubs, and other members of the community come together in partnership to maintain and clean up public lands and trails.

Other events that speak to those more seriously involved in the policy side of advocacy include Hike The Hill® and NextGen Trail Leaders. Celebrating its 26th year, Hike The Hill® brings together the trails community to collectively advocate their shared priorities before government leaders and congress, while NextGen Trail Leaders brings together five diverse and early career leaders within their respective outdoor communities and provides them with training, mentorship, and networking opportunities that empower them to get in touch with several elected officials. Finally, Alternative Breaks are volunteer trail stewardship projects in several parks and forests throughout America that are aimed specifically to get college students and young professionals involved in the community.

With several upcoming events and activities offered by American Hiking Society, the outdoor community will collaborate for a more inclusive environment that fosters a diverse crowd with shared passions. Through a steady flow of volunteers, AHS has room to only grow and expand their advocacy projects. American Hiking Society's core values highlight the transformative power that hiking possesses as a safe and diverse environment. They believe that inciting deep personal connections with the land will successfully bring people to care for its health and preservation. By encouraging the public to get outside and find their similarities with the natural world through hiking, American Hiking Society is successfully fostering an environment of inclusivity and love for the preservation of hiking trails across the country. Getting involved with this organization even on a small scale can immensely benefit the future of our American outdoor spaces and lifestyle.
