Battelle EVP Mark Peters Receives Henry DeWolf Smyth Nuclear Statesman Award

Battelle Executive Vice President for National Laboratory Management and Operations Mark Peters was presented yesterday with the Henry DeWolf Smyth Award by the American Nuclear Society and the Nuclear Energy Institute at the Nuclear Energy Assembly in Washington, D.C.

The Henry DeWolf Smyth Nuclear Statesman Award recognizes an individual for outstanding service in developing and guiding the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. It is presented once per year to only one individual. The nominee must be widely recognized for their statesmanlike contributions to the many aspects of nuclear energy. A significant segment of the candidate’s work must have been directed toward the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The award consists of an engraved bronze medal, which incorporates a bust of Henry DeWolf Smyth.

“I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Peters. “I have spent my career working to develop nuclear energy, and I believe it is one of the most effective ways we can help reduce carbon in our planet’s atmosphere, while still producing affordable, reliable, and resilient energy for our nation and the globe.”

Peters was previously the director of the Idaho National Laboratory, where Battelle plays a management and operations role for the United States Department of Energy. He served as associate laboratory director for Energy and Global Security at Argonne National Laboratory and serves as a senior advisor on nuclear energy technologies, research and development and nuclear waste policy. As an expert in nuclear fuel cycle technologies and nuclear waste management, he is called upon to provide expert testimony to Congress and advise in formulation of policies for nuclear fuel cycles, nonproliferation, and nuclear waste disposal. Peters also is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and holds a doctorate in geophysical science from the University of Chicago.

The Henry DeWolf Smyth Nuclear Statesman Award was established in 1972 by the Atomic Industrial Forum, now the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), and the American Nuclear Society (ANS). The inaugural award was presented to Dr. Smyth for his outstanding and statesmanlike contributions to the many aspects of nuclear energy activities. Subsequent recipients of the award have been selected by ANS and NEI, and the presentations have been made at the ANS/NEI banquet at the joint ANS/NEI National Winter Meeting. In 1995, the presentation time was changed to the Nuclear Energy Assembly in May of odd-numbered years, and the ANS Annual Meeting in June of even-numbered years.
