American Water Charitable Foundation Donated $3.5 Million in 2023 to Support and Strengthen Communities

The American Water Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization established by American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., announced today it awarded a combined total of $3.5 million to organizations across the U.S., supporting communities served by American Water in 2023.

Through the American Water Charitable Foundation’s Keep Communities Grant Program, $3 million was awarded to 236 non-profit organizations across the country. Additionally, nearly 3,500 employees participated in the Foundation’s Employee Matching Gift and Rewards Programs with over $500,000 donated to 1,900 charities.

Following are a few examples of how the American Water Charitable Foundation is making a difference nationwide:

  • “We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the generous support Hand in Hand has received from Iowa American Water and the American Water Charitable Foundation. Your support is truly appreciated, and it's making a meaningful impact on our mission of inclusion and empowerment,” said Ashley Hicks, Hand in Hand Director of Development and Events. “Your commitment to our cause is invaluable, and we thank you for being part of our mission. With this grant support, you're helping us create a more inclusive community for people of all abilities in the Quad City area as well as supporting families.”
  • “Support from partners like American Water Charitable Foundation and American Water Military Services Group enables the Red Cross to quickly assist military members and their families, delivering comfort and hope to people in times of need,” said Rosie Taravella, CEO of the American Red Cross New Jersey Region. “We deeply appreciate this generous donation as we work together to provide a full spectrum of support services for our military community and veterans every day.”
  • “The American Water Charitable Foundation’s belief in this project positively impacts the collective investment centered around our efforts to bring a best-in-class Children’s Discovery Center to downtown St. Joseph,” said Julie Gaddie, PhD, President, Mosaic Life Care Foundation. “We are grateful for the Water and Environment grant funds that will support the construction of an interactive water table learning exhibit within the center.”
  • “The American Water Charitable Foundation’s support will further our efforts to prepare neurodiverse young adults for a life of greater independence and fulfillment. Assisting young autistic adults gain job skills through social enterprise is a critical component of the services we provide,” said Meristem’s Executive Director, Erin Schirm. “We are grateful to the American Water Charitable Foundation and California American Water for their support and dedication to inclusion, diversity, equity and the local community.”

Since 2012, the American Water Charitable Foundation has invested $15.5 million in funding through grants and matching gifts that are important to American Water’s employees and positively impact the communities where they live and work.
