After brain injury, California woman creates App to help people love themselves and fight non-profit closures
An inspiring story of a woman who overcomes cancer & a terrible brain injury and goes on to create an innovative app that supports charities and non-profits, and drives a positive change in the society.

Laguna Beach, California – Cancer. Brain Injury. Any of these dreaded events in one’s life is enough to break the morale of majority of people. Suzy Patz has lived through both of them. And came out on top with her will and determination. “For me, it started with cancer 8 years ago. It’s life threatening, and it makes you re-evaluate everything,” recalls Suzy. “It rocked me, but it wasn’t enough.  I knew there was something more I was supposed to be doing with my life, but I didn’t know and couldn’t figure out what.  I went back about my normal life.  Knowing I was missing something.”

As she was recovering from the painful memories of her cancer, little did she know that there was more suffering waiting for her. Barely 4 years after she was diagnosed with cancer, she had a major accident. She was out for a run, when a kid who was texting and driving hit her with his car.

“A large hematoma on one side, a small on the other from bounce-back.  I remember very little about the next week and a half of my life,” says Suzy. “Recovery wasn’t easy.  I was initially awake for only an hour or so a day, then slowly able to increase it.  When I went back to work, I couldn’t walk in a straight line, taste and smell had all but disappeared, and when I pulled up my first email, I realized I couldn’t read.  The hardest part for me though, was that I was now a different person.”

But Suzy was determined not to let the unfortunate events in her life cripple her spirits. With some introspection and encouragement from family and friends, Suzy decided to take back control of her life. “The outpouring of love I received was phenomenal and surreal.  When I went back to work, the support, conversations, vulnerability & empathy from everyone around me helped me reorganize my life. I finally got it.  It was all of this,” remembers Suzy. “This support, this connection, this love, this community.  This was what my life was about.  This is what changes lives.  I want to bring this kind of love, support and kindness to everyone.  I want them to feel safe and supported and loved by the family around them, because we are all family.”

All the struggles that Suzy went through gave birth to the idea of an innovative app called “Love Out Loud”. An app with the ability to remind and encourage people to do good things for each other, to look at each other differently, and to create that ripple of kindness.

The Love Out Loud app is based on a simple yet powerful concept – share your good deeds socially and help a charity. All that users have to do is to share their acts of kindness with the world through this app, and a charity of their choice gets a donation for every post. Users do not have to pay anything out of their pocket. The charities/causes supported by the app include Habitat for Humanity, Feeding America, Malala Fund, Sierra Club, She’s the First and American Heart Association.

“It’s social crowdfunding done differently,” says Suzy, founder of Love Out Loud App Inc. “Turning your small deeds and acts of kindness into dollars and cents for the charity of your choice. Isn’t that cool?” We couldn’t agree more. With the possibility of up to 38% of non-profits having to close their doors within the next 2 years due to covid fundraising and resource challenges, and the deep division that society is currently facing, there has never been a better time for a mission like this; to bring people together as a force for good.
