Martha's Notebook by C. Fulster follows Martha as her sister Ava and their parents are forced to flee from their home after violent, zombie-like, microchipped creatures known as "Chippers" begin hunting in their neighborhood. The family narrowly escapes and travels to an abandoned hotel, where they meet other survivors. They learn that these Chippers are evolving and becoming smarter. As the group journeys forward, they encounter more Chippers and face some absolutely devastating losses. They discover that the Chippers were created through a government experiment involving DHIA, an AI system with shocking links to the party. Realizing that their survival is tied to stopping DHIA, Martha and the remaining survivors make a plan to confront Onakele Enterprises, the company behind the Chippers, in hopes of shutting down the AI and ending the apocalypse.
In Martha's Notebook, C. Fulster gives readers a refreshing take on the zombie genre with a unique twist, mixing horror with components of science fiction with the use of technology. This innovative literary approach tosses out an overused genre trope and makes the Chippers more menacing and unpredictable. I loved the characters. The first-person narrative by Martha gives a perspective not just as a girl who is in the throes of an apocalypse, but also as a coming-of-age story where the future she and the other kids had hoped for no longer exists. The writing is sharp, with fast-paced and intensive action scenes that do not always pan out as we expect, or at least desire. Fulster also tosses in a spanner which is a complete surprise. The combination of fear, suspense, and the occasional heroics makes this a solid trilogy starter and a true pleasure for fans of dystopian fiction. Recommended."
