Fungal Disease Awareness Week and Safeguarding Workers and the Public from Preventable Exposure Risks

By: WebWire

For 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has designated September 19th through the 23rd as Fungal Disease Awareness Week. The week is meant to highlight the importance of recognizing serious fungal diseases early enough in the course of a patient's illness to provide life-saving treatment.

According to the CDC:
Some fungal diseases go undiagnosed, leading to serious illness and death. Increased awareness about fungal diseases is one of the most important ways we can improve early recognition and reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment. A key clue to when a sick person may have a fungal disease is that he or she is being treated with medicine for another type of infection but does not get better.

“It's also important for people to recognize that the symptoms of some fungal diseases can be similar to those of COVID-19,” said Soraya Selamie, MPH, EHS Project Manager at CTSI. “Some fungal diseases can also feel like the flu or pneumonia. Exposure to elevated levels of fungi can even trigger an asthma attack in some people with the condition. For many others, an allergic reactions is a common response. These are all reasons why preventing the growth of indoor mold (fungi) is so important, especially in healthcare environments where people with weakened or suppressed immune systems can often be found.”

Dedicated to helping businesses, institutions, and healthcare providers meet these challenges are the infection control, industrial hygiene, and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) professionals at CTSI. Their experts provide consulting, testing, monitoring, and training services to protect against exposure to fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens.
