With the primary elections taking place in less than one month, the Miami-Dade and Broward Units of the National Association of Social Workers, Florida Chapter (NASW-FL) seek to engage members of the social work profession, students, and the general public in a forum to hear from candidates for a variety of elected offices. The members of NASW-FL's Miami-Dade and Broward Units have been working together through the Collaborative Legislative Advocacy Committee (CLAC) to bring  Mental health, Social Work profession, and Social justice policy issues to the forefront of the minds of social work professionals and students. In partnership with Barry University's Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work, the Miami-Dade and Broward Units of NASW-FL will be hosting the 2022 Local Candidate Forum on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The event will be held at Barry University, located at 11300 NE 2nd Ave. Miami Shores, FL 33161, in the Andreas Building Room 111.

Candidates for a variety of elected offices in Miami-Dade and Broward counties were invited to the 2022 Local Candidate Forum, including those running for School Board, County Court Judge, County Commission, State House of Representatives, and State Senate. A total of 38 candidates have confirmed their intent to participate in the forum.

Social workers are professionals who are educated and trained to help individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities overcome challenges, enhance their overall well-being, and reach their full potential. They work in a variety of settings, including mental health and community agencies, schools, private practices, businesses, hospitals, nonprofit organizations, and even the government at all levels. There are nearly 720,000 social workers in the United States, a number that is expected to rise by 12% by the end of the decade. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work is one of the fastest-growing professions in the country. Moreover, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is a membership organization that promotes, develops, and protects the practice of social work and social workers. NASW-FL, Florida's chapter of NASW, represents more than 4,200 professional social workers throughout the state.

Social workers are uniquely equipped to advocate for social justice issues that impact their clients. Through its 2022 Local Candidate Forum, the Collaborative Legislative Advocacy Committee of the Miami-Dade and Broward Units of NASW-FL is eager to help current and future social workers, along with community members and the general public, learn about candidates' positions, platforms, and plans to address issues of importance to social workers and those they serve.
