Family-Owned Business Celebrates Teaching the Joy of Swimming to Three Generations of the Bay Area Community

Fremont, California - The American Swim Academy is making a splash to celebrate its 50th Anniversary of teaching thousands in the Bay Area the love of swimming. Since opening its doors on May 28, 1973 as the Fremont Swim School, the school has literally been a lifesaver for three generations of Californians.

Jack Alberti had a dream of opening a swimming school in an indoor pool, which at the time didn’t exist in the Bay area. The dream became reality after Alberti, with the support of his wife Donna, took the plunge with a second mortgage on their family home to transform a 3,000-square-foot warehouse into the first indoor pool in the Fremont area. Jack and his brother-in-law Doug Johnson taught the school’s inaugural group of 35 swimmers while Donna handled the books, making it truly a family affair. After fifty years and a name change to American Swim Academy (ASA), the Alberti family remains at the helm as owners and operators.

“We treat our members and staff like family,” remarks President Matt Alberti, on the success of ASA. “For the first few years, our staff really knew every family by name, and some of them are still our friends today. Now that we have grown to over 10,000 swimmers, we can’t possibly know them all, but our philosophy of treating members and staff like family remains the same.”

"Swimming is a life skill,” Matt continues. "It’s the only youth sport that can literally save your life. One of our clients became very emotional as she told me about seeing her toddler at the back door, soaking wet. She had been getting her house ready for a party and never saw her son slip out the back door and fall into the pool. I don’t want to think about the outcome if he hadn’t had lessons. These are the stories that motivate us to keep doing what we do.”

Since 1973, American Swim Academy has served swimmers of all ages and abilities, from six months old through adulthood in the Bay Area, with locations in Fremont, Newark, Livermore, Dublin, and Walnut Creek. Founded, owned, and operated by the Alberti Family, the American Swim Academy has grown to over 10,300 students taught by 350 swim instructors supported by more than 60 management staff members, all with the mission to provide high-quality swim instruction with unsurpassed customer service.
