Shoshana Leffler Champions Hands-On STEM Education for All Students
Shoshana Leffler, Bronx, New York Educator
As the demand for STEM professionals continues to grow, Leffler calls on educators and policymakers to support innovative teaching methods that bring STEM subjects to life for all students.

Educator and developmental geneticist, Shoshana Leffler, is on a mission to make STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education more accessible, engaging, and impactful for all students, particularly those in underserved communities. Leffler believes that hands-on, inquiry-based learning is the key to unlocking students' potential in STEM fields and shaping the next generation of innovators.

"STEM is not just about learning theories—it's about understanding the world through problem-solving and critical thinking," says Leffler, who holds an A.B. in Chemistry from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Developmental Genetics from New York University. "By giving students the tools to explore scientific concepts through real-world applications, we can spark their curiosity and build confidence."

Leffler’s approach is grounded in inquiry-based learning, where students actively engage in experiments and projects that connect STEM to their everyday lives. For example, her chemistry classes might analyze local water quality or study the chemistry of cooking. These hands-on experiences, she explains, lead to a deeper understanding of complex topics and help students see the relevance of STEM in their communities.

According to the National Math and Science Initiative, students who engage in hands-on, inquiry-based learning are 70% more likely to succeed in STEM subjects. Leffler's methods have proven particularly effective in Title 1 schools, where students often face additional barriers to academic success.

"Many students in underserved areas don’t have the same access to STEM resources, and that creates a gap in opportunity," Leffler explains. "But with the right support and teaching strategies, we can close that gap and show students that they have the potential to excel in these fields."

Leffler also highlights the importance of mentorship and community involvement. In addition to her teaching, she offers personalized tutoring sessions that cater to individual learning styles and needs. Her efforts have helped countless students overcome academic challenges, and she’s been recognized with the MƒA Master Teacher Fellowship for her work in STEM education.

"STEM education is the foundation of future careers," says Leffler. "By investing in hands-on, experiential learning, we're not just preparing students for tests—we're preparing them to be problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders in an increasingly complex world."

As the demand for STEM professionals continues to grow, Leffler calls on educators and policymakers to support innovative teaching methods that bring STEM subjects to life for all students. "We need to give every student the chance to explore, experiment, and discover," she says. "That’s how we build a stronger, more equitable future."
