Navigating between Chinese and American cultures has profoundly shaped my artistic vision, enabling me to synthesize diverse perspectives into my work. The influence of Chinese culture is evident in my use of minimalism and symbolism, drawing from the traditional emphasis on negative space, which invites contemplation and personal interpretation. This approach contrasts yet complements the bold, expressive styles I encountered during my studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Western focus on individualism and personal narrative has encouraged me to explore and assert my own voice as an artist. In my feature film PO, I examine the interplay between ancient Confucian values and modern East Asian family dynamics. Additionally, I integrate psychoanalytic and structuralist theories, particularly those of Lacan, to delve into the protagonist Li Yu's internal conflicts and her struggle to break free from societal constraints. My work is deeply rooted in the storytelling traditions of both cultures, which inspires me to address universal themes such as identity, migration, and the confluence of different cultural legacies, making my work resonate with a wide audience.
Can you elaborate on how these dual influences manifest in your recent projects?
Absolutely. In PO, for instance, the protagonist's journey is not just a personal one but also reflects a broader cultural dialogue between Eastern and Western ideologies. The film explores how traditional values can both anchor and confine individuals, and how the merging of these cultural paradigms creates a complex space for identity formation. My visual style in this film deliberately incorporates both the restrained elegance of Chinese aesthetics and the more direct, emotionally charged expressionism that I absorbed from Western art. This duality allows the narrative to unfold on multiple levels, engaging viewers from different backgrounds and encouraging them to reflect on their own cultural experiences.
What themes are central to your work, and why do they resonate with you?
Themes of identity, migration, and the blending of traditions are central to my work because they reflect my own life experiences. Growing up with a foot in two different cultures has given me a unique perspective on how identities are formed, transformed, and sometimes conflicted. These themes are not only personal but also universally relatable, as many people navigate multiple cultural identities in our increasingly globalized world. I strive to create art that speaks to this shared experience, providing a space where diverse audiences can find common ground and understanding.
