A fundraiser sponsored by Holliday’s Helping Hands (HHH) to alleviate LA’s homeless crisis raised $250,000, announced HHH Founder and Executive Director Miss Katina Holliday. The 3rd Annual Shining Through Service With Compassion Black-Tie Gala held recently at The Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena attracted celebrities, business tycoons, community leaders and local residents who gathered together with a united purpose -- to stamp out homelessness.
Those interested in supporting the cause may still do so by visiting www.hollidayshh.org to bid on a number of silent auction items.
Among the evening’s highlights was the presentation of the Shining Through Service with Compassion award to Maxine Waters, U.S. Representative for California's 43rd congressional district since 1991, who expressed her appreciation of the honor and praised Holliday’s Helping Hands for the work it does to fight homelessness.
Also honored was Carson Mayor Pro tem Jawane Hilton for his collaboration with HHH and for serving his community; Lisa Collins, CEO of Ladies of Football, who partners with HHH for its annual Mother’s Day brunch for homeless moms; and Yuri Williams, founder of "A Future Super Hero and Friends," a nonprofit that provides support and services to vulnerable populations including the homeless, veterans, children with special needs and seniors.
Sponsors of the gala included Horizon Group, Vitality Institute, YourTax Team, Beautiful Minds, CDF Labor Law, Falcon Loans and Upward Housing
Proceeds from the gala will benefit three of HHH's cornerstones:
STAR Program - Empowers high school aged members of homeless families to break free from the cycle of poverty through scholarships, summer camps, reading programs and tutoring.
House A Home Program - Upgrades Section 8 housing by transforming empty apartments into warm, inviting, fully furnished homes thus creating a safe, stable and welcoming environment.
Shine Ambassador Worksource (SAWS) Program - Offers valuable job training for those transitioning from homelessness to living lives of independence. Opportunities are available in various fields including landscaping, maintenance, culinary arts, retail, healthcare and customer service. Some may land onsite training at PIX Exchange, HHH's own thrift store and screen printing facility, and those pursuing careers in healthcare may enroll in the HHH School of Nursing, where they can become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) at no cost (such programs offered outside HHH typically cost $2,000).
